About Zoology Department:
The Department of Zoology of Dr V.S. Krishna Government Degree College (A), Visakhapatnam is a prestigious and dynamic department dedicated to studying animal biology. Established in 1968, the department has a long-standing tradition of excelling in teaching, research, and community service. Over the years, it has expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure, making significant contributions to the field of Zoology and allied disciplines.
History:
Established in the year 1968, the Department of Zoology was one of the foundational departments of Dr. V.S. Krishna Government Degree College. It began with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program in Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology (CBZ), which has been instrumental in providing a strong foundation in life sciences. Later, the Department introduced Medical Lab Technology course which was discontinued after it was declared as a Vocational Course.
Academic Programs:
B.Sc - CBZ: Ever since its establishment, thedepartment has been offering BSc programme with Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology combination in both English and Telugu media. Telugu medium is discontinued from the academic year 2022-23 onwards.
B.Voc. (Aquaculture): Introduced in the academic year 2021-22, this Bachelor of Vocational course in Aquaculture addresses the growing need for expertise in aquaculture, a vital industry in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The program aims to equip students with knowledge and practical skills in aquaculture practices, fishery management and sustainable seafood production. It is also discontinued from the year 2022-23.
M.Sc. (Zoology): In 2022, the department expanded its postgraduate offerings with the introduction of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Zoology. This course focuses on advanced studies in animal biology, ecology, genetics, and physiology preparing students for research and academic careers in Zoology and allied fields.
B.Sc - Honours Zoology: In tune with the National Education Policy 2020, the department is offering BSc Honours in Zoology in English Medium since 2023-24 academic year.
B.Sc - Honours Fisheries: The department has been increasing its horizon with the introduction of new programmes. In the year 2023-24, to create employment opportunities, B.Sc. Honours Fisheries has been introduced.
