Department of Commerce Profile:

The commerce department had its humble beginning in a UG course, 1968 in Dr.V.S.Krishna Govt. College, Visakhapatnam. The college was originally located at Visakha Valley near Indira Zoological Park. Since, the college was a composite college the department offered both intermediate and UG courses in commerce. The programmer offered by the department is bachelor of commerce in both media. The first batch of B.Com. Students’ appeared for the university examination in 1968-71. Several eminent teachers like Sri B.S.Patro, late P.V.Sitarama Rao and Sri G. Rama Rao Naidu also served in the department. Sri B.S.Patro who worked as first Gazetted lecturer and as the head of department who was later promoted as the principal, Govt. Degree College, Tanuku. In the year 1981, the department was shifted to its own premises of the college at maddilapalem along with other departments. After shifting the department to the new premises, the department has witnessed a rapid growth in its infrastructure and in the intake of commerce students in to B.Com. Some senior commerce teachers like late C.K.P. Babji, Sri P.S. Prakasha Rao, Sri B. Satya Murthy and Sri N.G.P. Padmanabham served in the department and contributed a lot to the department. Some senior commerce lecturers acted as lecturers-in-charges like Sri D. Atchaiah, Capt. M.T. Bhagavan Rao, and Sri P. Raja Ram contributed to the growth of the department. Two senior lecturers who worked in the department were promoted as principals and posted to Govt. Degree Colleges, Bheemunipatnam and Paderu. At present Lecturer K. Ravi Kumar is the lecturer in-charge of the department. The department has a built-up area of 130 Sq.mts. With one commerce computer lab and a staff room for the faculty members. The department has eight sanctioned posts and out of eight, five posts are filled by regular faculty and one is filled by contract faculty. 

The department offers UG courses for B.Com students and also provides PG courses for M.Com Students. The department offers B.Com (General), B.Com (Computer Applications), B.Com (Accounting and Taxation) courses to enrich the knowledge of the students to face the competition in the market. The department enjoys freedom and prepares annual academic plan in accordance with the syllabus prepared and approved by the academic council keeping in view the overall syllabus of Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. It has freedom also in planning and organizing, curricular and co-curricular activities like Seminars, Assignments, Quiz, Debates, Group Discussions, Market Surveys, and Guest Lectures and Extension Activities etc. 

Aims and Objectives: - To expose and motivate the commerce students about the recent trends that are taking place in the areas of commerce, trade and banking.  To train and help the students of socio-economic background for the examinations and to supply study material in the concerned subjects.  To improve the communication skills of students, guest lectures and seminars are to be arranged by the department.  To expose the students to industrial visits & to make them involve in research inject activities.  To conduct job-oriented certificate/add on courses in Computer & Management Education in commerce computer lab for the benefit of commerce students..  To provide our students with requisite knowledge and managerial skills for appropriate development of learners  To enable every student to cope up with the latest development in contemporary national and global level, through effective transaction of the curricular and co-curricular aspects. The main objective of the department is to provide best quality of academic inputs to B.Com and M.com students. From all sections of the society, students are being admitted in to B.Com and M.com course as well. Hence, faculty members are thriving their best to provide their services with sincerity and commitment for the benefit of commerce students. After Bifurcating the intermediate course from the UG course in the composite college, the department has offered B.Com courses with revised common core syllabus with specializations in final year subjects like Rural Marketing, Principles of Marketing, Advanced Corporate Accounting and Management Accounting. Under the revised common core syllabus, commerce students are offered with one compulsory paper in computers called introduction to computers & general foundation course in first year and also computer skills in the second year general foundation in the third year of B.Com course. These two computer papers contain both theory & practical classes. Computer practical classes are being conducted in the commerce computer lab. Commerce computer lab: With the all of our efforts of the faculty, a computer lab has been established exclusively for the benefit of commerce students of our college. The computer lab is now put to optimum use of the students. The main objective of this is To design the to provide students and staff with a vast array of I.T resources needed to promote learning activities in the department.
