The course and learning outcomes
A ) The students’ will be able to have a grasp of the evolution of English
language and history of English literature through the Old and Middle
English periods.

To understand and appreciate various literary forms or genres of literature.
-
To critically appreciate the aesthetic and literary quality of poetry and prose pieces. It also helps the development of student as an individual and his or her command of the language.
-
It emphasizes the central role of English as a world language and its importance to students in terms of language and knowledge of varying cultures in the English speaking world.
-
The reading of literature provides an opportunity for the language to be internalized whereby grammar rules, phrases and vocabulary already learnt can be reinforced and at the same time new words and phrases encountered. Furthermore, authentic texts give the reader a possibility to experience a genuine language context and the motivation to want to use it themselves in speech. One of the main benefits of literature is that it acts as a stimulus that ignites interest and motivates the student by involving them on a personal, emotional level.
Semester –II in B.A. Spl. English degree programme:
Paper-II,–“An Introduction to English Literature-II” :
The course and learning outcomes:

It introduces and enables the pupils to the history of English literature by emphasizing the significance of Renaissance through Elizabethan and Jacobean periods by discussing the socio-political and literary trends of that era.

It exposes the students to various literary terms and their significance in literary works.
-
The prose and the poetry pieces help to develop students’ desire and interest in reading books by creating a classroom atmosphere that promotes open dialogue, to develop a tolerance of different cultures and encourages the sharing of different perspectives and interpretations.

To develop students’ ability to read literature in English with good understanding and reflect over texts from different perspectives and react to literature on an emotional level.
Semester –III in B.A. Spl. English degree programme:
Paper-III - “An Introduction to English Language and Literature-III”
The course and learning outcomes:
-
A coherent and a systematic understanding of literary developments during the Restoration and Augustan Periods of 17th and 18th centuries respectively in English literature.
-
Apart from the comprehension of various literary forms and terms, it develops the aesthetic sensibility with pieces of prose and poetry along with the introduction of genre, Drama.
-
It develops the ability to identify, speak and write about different literary genres, forms, periods and movements. The ability to understand and engage with various literary and critical concepts and categories. The ability to read texts closely, paying attention to themes, generic conventions, historical contexts, and linguistic and stylistic variations and innovations and the ability to understand appreciate, analyze, and use different theoretical frameworks.

It develops the sense of ethical and moral responsibility among fellow humans in order to see and respect differences in and among various species and life-forms and learn to transcend them.

The course and learning outcomes:

A coherent and a systematic understanding of literary developments during the Romantic and Victorian Periods in English literature. The influence of the socio-political developments and Industrialization on English literature.

A detailed comprehension of various literary forms and terms embedded in the works of literature. It develops the critical aesthetic sensibility to appreciate the pieces of prose and poetry along with the multiple perspectives and interpretations.

Pupils demonstrate a coherent and systematic knowledge and understanding of the field of literary and theoretical developments in the field of English literature. It would also include the student’s ability to identify, speak and write about genres, forms, periods, movements and conventions of writing as well as the ability to understand and engage with literary-critical concepts, theories and categories demonstrate the ability to understand the role of literature in a changing world from

The pupil’s ability to speak and write clearly in standard, academic English and ability to read carefully various viewpoints and engage with them would be enhanced. It further enables the ability to use critical concepts and categories with clarity.

Paper-V –“An outline of 20th century literature-V”
The course and learning outcomes:

Critical understanding of the modernism, post-modernism and other literary movements to evaluate English literature in the 20th century.

To enable comprehension and appreciation of various literary forms and terms vividly used in the genres of novels and dramas.

To critically understand think about the characteristics of 20th century, the works of Philip Larkin, George Orwell and G.B.Shaw, whose works perfectly reflect the psyche, ethos and values of the age are prescribed.

The theoretical and literary developments in relation to the specific field display an ability to read and understand various literary genres and stylistic variations and write critically and also cultivate ability to look at and evaluate literary texts as a field of study and as part of the wider network of local and global culture demonstrate a critical aptitude and reflexive thinking to systematically analyze the existing scholarship and expand critical questions and the knowledge base in the field of English studies using digital resources.
